Two weeks of spring market in front of the Old Town Hall and at the Gänseliesel
The Easter Market is one of Göttingen's most traditional market events. It marks the end of the dark winter months and the transition to spring – a particularly anticipated moment in the rhythm of the North German seasons. With the setting up of market stalls in front of the Old Town Hall, the open-air season begins in Göttingen's city center.
The Gänseliesel on the central fountain in front of the Old Town Hall is Göttingen's most famous landmark and a meeting point for students, tourists, and locals. The bronze figure dates from 1901 and is at the center of a student tradition: anyone who has defended their doctoral thesis in Göttingen kisses the Gänseliesel – a ritual deeply embedded in the city's culture. In 2026, the Gänseliesel celebrates its 125th anniversary, giving the Easter Market at its central location additional significance.
The stalls cover a wide range of products. Artisans present jewelry made of silver and natural materials, ceramics, glasswork, leather goods, wooden objects, and textiles. Clothing from small manufacturers, natural cosmetic products, candles, and Easter decorations complement the offerings. On the culinary side, visitors will find market stalls with Schmalzkuchen (lard cakes), Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Bratwurst (sausage), crepes, cheese specialties, and sweets.
A classic children's carousel in the market square attracts the youngest visitors. This clearly positions the market as a family-friendly event. While parents and grandparents browse the stalls, children find their entertainment in a central location.
The market is open daily from 11 am to 7 pm – with the sole exception of Good Friday, when it remains closed for religious and legal reasons. This break on Good Friday is part of the traditional market choreography and respects the holiday of the Christian Holy Week.
For two weeks, the market square is the central stage of city life. Students, professionals, families, tourists – the mix of visitors makes the market a lively meeting point. The central location between the Old Town Hall and the Gänseliesel ensures high footfall and good visibility for exhibitors.
2026 is special because the Gänseliesel celebrates its 125th anniversary. The bronze figure, the city's landmark since 1901 and a symbol of Göttingen's doctoral celebration ceremonies, gives the market additional significance. A special exhibition at the Göttingen City Museum accompanies the anniversary.
