About GKKG Prunksitzung

The Prunksitzung (gala session) of the Große Koblenzer Karnevalsgesellschaft 1847 e.V. (GKKG) is one of the most traditional gala events of the Koblenz carnival season. With impressive uniforms, live music, guard and show dances, 'Büttenreden' (parody speeches), and 'Mariechen' (solo dancers), the session follows the centuries-old liturgy of Rhenish carnival. The GKKG is one of the oldest carnival societies in the city and organizes several sessions between January and February 2026 as part of the Koblenz carnival season, which comprises over 200 events. Member information, dates, and tickets via [email protected].

The Große Koblenzer Karnevalsgesellschaft 1847 e.V. – GKKG for short – is one of the oldest carnival societies in the city and has been contributing to the festive life at the Deutsches Eck for over 175 years. Its Prunksitzungen (gala sessions) during the season between January and February 2026 are a social and cultural highlight for carnival enthusiasts from Koblenz and the region.

An Old Guard with a Young Face

The GKKG combines tradition and renewal: Uniformed corps, its own council of eleven ('Elferrat'), dance guards ('Gardetanzgruppen'), and show dance groups are as much a part of its identity as the commitment of young members who continuously modernize the program. With sessions, a session president, 'Funken' (carnival dancers), and the city guard tradition, the society covers the full spectrum of Rhenish carnival.

Liturgy of the Prunksitzung

A Prunksitzung follows a fixed dramaturgy: The entry of the 'Elferrat' accompanied by music, a welcome by the session president, performances by the 'Tanzmariechen' (solo dancers), 'Büttenreden' in varying styles from slapstick to political satire and self-irony, show dance groups with elaborate choreographies, performances by mood bands, and the joint singing of carnival classics. The highlight is usually the appearance of the reigning 'Tollitäten' (prince and princess couple) or friendly carnival societies.

Koblenz Carnival Season 2025/26

The GKKG sessions are part of the overall Koblenz carnival season, which comprises over 200 events under the umbrella of the AKK (Working Group of Koblenz Carnival) – including the 'Schängelschiff', the 'Schwerdonnerstagsparty', the 'Rosenmontagszug' (Rose Monday parade) on February 16, 2026 (12:11 PM), and 'Veilchendienstag' (Shrove Tuesday) with the 'Kehraus' (farewell) tradition in Immendorf.
