Autumn Volksfest in the Augsburg Region
For generations, the Gersthofer Kirchweih has been a firm fixture in the autumn calendar of the Augsburg region. Around the third Sunday in October, the extensive festival grounds north of Thyssenstraße become a magnet for families, clubs, and Volksfest enthusiasts from the town of Gersthofen, the district of Augsburg, and the Bavarian university city of Augsburg.
Habo's Festschänke – Heart of the Festival
The heart of the Kirchweih is Habo's Festschänke, the large festival tent with live music. The musical spectrum ranges from brass and dance music to classic party bands and rock bands that fill the tent on weekends. Bavarian delicacies, Swabian specialties, and beer from a regional brewery partner accompany the festival evenings. Thousands of visitors gather in the tent daily.
Rides and Showmen
The festival grounds offer a diverse range of showmen attractions: a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, roller coasters, a carousel, haunted houses, and numerous children's rides. Stalls selling crêpes, grilled fish (Steckerlfisch), and sweets line the paths between the rides. A dedicated sales mile with market stalls for household goods, textiles, and souvenirs is also part of the tradition.
Themed and Family Days
The eleven festival days are divided into several thematic focuses: Family afternoons with reduced ride prices, a Seniors' afternoon, traditional costume and themed evenings, and the traditional Maurermontag as the final festival day, which holds special significance for local craftsmen and businesses. Thus, the Kirchweih combines a typical Volksfest experience with the commercial tradition of the Augsburg region.
Gersthofen – A Town with Industry and Club Life
Gersthofen is located immediately north of Augsburg in the Augsburg district in the state of Bavaria. With around 23,000 inhabitants and a long-standing industrial base, the town is one of the largest in the Augsburg region. The Kirchweih is supported by active club life and represents the social highlight of the town's autumn calendar.
Getting There and Safety
Due to the high number of visitors, the town recommends arriving by public transport via the bus stops » Am Ballonstartplatz « and » Thyssenstraße Ost «. Parking is limited and available on Friedhofstraße. Standard security regulations apply on the festival grounds: no weapons, no large backpacks, no cannabis. Dogs should be left at home due to noise and crowds.
