Whit Monday at the three-story Wiegboldsbur gallery mill
Built in 1812, the Wiegboldsbur Mill is one of the largest and most impressive gallery mills in East Frisia. With its three stories, characteristic brick-red base, and wide gallery, it shapes the village image of Wiegboldsbur. The volunteer mill association keeps the mill in perfect working order and regularly demonstrates its operation, especially on German Mill Day.
In addition to Wiegboldsbur, the mills in Münkeboe and Schweindorf are also participating in the event. Südbrookmerland is thus one of the municipalities with the most mills in East Frisia. German Mill Day has been celebrated nationwide on Whit Monday since 1994 and brings together around 1,000 historical mills of all types. In East Frisia, with its traditionally mill-rich landscape, the event holds particular significance.
The Wiegboldsbur Mill will grind rye and wheat on Mill Day, weather permitting. Visitors can watch the miller at work, purchase freshly ground flour directly, and enjoy coffee, cake, and East Frisian tea at the snack stands. Guided tours explain the functionality of the gallery mill and its importance for the region's economic history. Many locations offer hands-on activities for children related to grain, flour, and bread.
The preservation of East Frisian mills would be unthinkable without the decades of commitment from mill associations. With the proceeds from flour sales, refreshments, and donations on Mill Day, the associations finance the maintenance of the structures and ensure that future generations can also experience these technical monuments.
Mill Day 2026 in Südbrookmerland is entirely dedicated to the fully functional Wiegboldsbur Mill and the other mills in the municipality. The volunteer mill associations prepare the day with great care and personally guide visitors through their structures.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Wiegboldsbur, Münkeboe, and Schweindorf mill associations in the weeks leading up to Whit Monday.
