German Mill Day — Nationwide Event Day

The German Mill Day is a nationwide event day that has taken place annually on Whit Monday since 1994. Mill associations, local history museums, and private mill owners open their doors and demonstrate the historical significance of wind and water mills, post mills, Dutch mills, and industrial milling techniques. The Suhlendorf Craft Museum will participate in 2026, as it has in previous years, in this special event day.

Suhlendorf Craft Museum

The museum is located at Museumsplatz 1 in Rosche OT Suhlendorf — a district of the Rosche municipality in the northeastern district of Uelzen. It is dedicated to regional craftsmanship in all its breadth: from agricultural crafts and mill construction to specialized trades such as blacksmithing, saddlery, wheelwrighting, and basket weaving. Exhibits, tools, and machines from several centuries provide insight into the working world of past generations.

Demonstration of Historical Mills

On Mill Day, historical milling techniques will be demonstrated at the museum. Depending on the exhibits and weather conditions, these may include models, functional demonstrations, or detailed explanations of how wind, water, and animal-powered mills work. Millstones will be set in motion, gears explained, and the process from grain to flour traced. For many visitors, it is their first encounter with functioning mill technology.

Live Crafting Techniques

Parallel to the mill demonstrations, craftspeople will showcase traditional techniques: blacksmithing at the forge, woodturning on historical lathes, spinning and weaving, wheelwrighting, basket weaving. The demonstrations are interactive — those who wish can try their hand under guidance. Children, in particular, are often enthusiastic when they can swing a hammer on the blacksmith's anvil or spin a thread for the first time.

Guided Tours and Music

Throughout the day, guided tours of the museum will take place, explaining the history and function of the exhibits. Musical performances — often featuring traditional instruments or folk music groups — will create the right atmosphere. Refreshments with coffee, cake, and light snacks will round off the offerings.

Family-Friendly Admission Prices

With admission prices of €5 for adults and €2 for children aged 6 to 16, the museum is also financially accessible for families. A family with two children pays less than for a visit to a café — and experiences an educational day with hands-on experience.

Regular Season Opening

The 2026 museum season begins on March 29 and runs every Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Mill Day on Whit Monday is a special highlight of the season with an expanded program and a unique atmosphere.
