Whit Monday at the historic mill in Ruttel with crafts and tradition
Since 1994, the German Society for Millkunde and Mill Preservation (DGM) has coordinated the annual German Mill Day on Whit Monday. More than 1,000 mills open their doors, demonstrate their functionality, and advocate for the preservation of a central component of German technical cultural heritage. The Rutteler Mühle in Friesland's Zetel also participates.
The Rutteler Mühle in the Ruttel district of Zetel is a characteristic Frisian mill, maintained and cared for by the local mill association. It represents the centuries-old tradition of the miller's craft on the North Sea coast – a region where wind has always been an abundant source of energy. Today, the mill is a technical monument and a living piece of local history.
On May 25, 2026, the mill will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors can explore the interior, the millstones, and the drive technology, and receive explanations about the functioning of a windmill from the mill association. Grinding will be demonstrated if the wind is suitable.
A craft festival will develop around the mill. Exhibitors will showcase traditional craft techniques, regional products will be presented and sold – fresh bread made from its own flour is often included. Coffee, cake, and hearty snacks will be offered on-site.
Families will find a welcoming environment on the mill grounds. Whit Monday is a public holiday, and many residents of the Zetel municipality and visitors from the entire Friesland district use the day for an outing. The combination of technology, tradition, and rural atmosphere makes Mill Day a popular family event.
The 2026 edition continues the Rutteler Mühle's long-standing participation in the German Mill Day. The combination of technical tours, a craft festival, and rural gastronomy has proven successful and attracts a diverse audience of families, local history enthusiasts, and technology buffs.
If the wind is strong, grinding will be demonstrated – a rare experience that makes the direct connection between natural power and traditional craftsmanship tangible.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the mill association in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Rutteler Mühle, Friedeburger Str. 2, 26340 Zetel-Ruttel (Friesland district).
By car via the A29, exit Zetel, then follow signs for Ruttel/Friedeburg. Parking available at the mill.
Whit Monday, May 25, 2026, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Free admission. Food and drinks for purchase. Donations for the mill association are welcome.
Whit Monday is an ideal day for a cycling trip through the Frisian landscape – the mill and the surrounding agriculture complement each other harmoniously.
