Mill Day in the Seven Mills Village on the Eckbach with Duck Race and Pentecost Market
The municipality of Großkarlbach is located in the Leiningerland region on the Eckbach, which flows through the village from east to west. Seven historic mills once lined the banks of the stream, using water power for various purposes: grinding flour, operating sawmills, processing oil. The designation Seven Mills Village is a reminder of this industrial past and is now Großkarlbach's trademark.
The German Mill Day has been proclaimed annually on Whit Monday since 1994 by the German Society for Millkunde and Mill Preservation. Historic mills throughout Germany open their doors to the public. Großkarlbach has long been one of the participating locations and uses Mill Day to make its own mill history tangible.
On Mill Day in Großkarlbach, three of the historic mills are accessible to visitors. The Dorfmühle is now a mill museum and showcases the technology of traditional water mills. The Pappelmühle documents the milling of the 20th century with industrial equipment. The Rheinmühle complements the picture of the Großkarlbach mill landscape. At each station, members of the mill association explain the functionality and history.
A special attraction for families is the duck race in the afternoon. Hundreds of yellow plastic ducks are released into the Eckbach and drift with the current towards the finish line. The proceeds from the sale of race sponsorships benefit the mill association, which is responsible for the preservation of the historic mill facilities.
A Pentecost Market takes place in Großkarlbach to accompany Mill Day. Regional producers offer Palatinate products, craftspeople display their work, and the mill association provides catering with bratwurst, cakes, coffee, and drinks at several stands.
On Whit Monday, Großkarlbach becomes a meeting point for everyone interested in mill technology, Palatinate industrial history, and a convivial family outing. The three open mills can be visited in any order, and members of the mill association will explain the facilities on site.
The detailed program for each mill and the specific explanations offered will be published by the mill association and the local municipality in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
