Berlin's big spring run – 21.0975 km through Mitte, past the Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden, with over 35,000 runners
When spring arrives in Berlin, the running season kicks off with the Half Marathon. Since 1981, SCC (Sport-Club Charlottenburg) – now under organizer SCC EVENTS – has been organizing the Berlin Half Marathon. It's part of the same race series as the Berlin Marathon in September but is considered a major event in its own right and ranks among the largest half marathons globally.
At 21.0975 km, the course winds through the heart of the capital. It starts on Straße des 17. Juni in Tiergarten, passes the Victory Column, then goes through Unter den Linden – Berlin's historic boulevard – past the Humboldt Forum, across Schlossplatz, Friedrichstraße, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, continuing along the Spree riverbanks and through Mitte back to the Brandenburg Gate. The course is flat, fast, with hardly any inclines – personal bests are regularly achieved here.
The Berlin Half Marathon includes several competitions: the main run for runners (21.0975 km), the wheelchair half marathon, the handbike race, and the inline skating race. This makes the event explicitly inclusive – different sports share the course in staggered start waves.
On race day, a large part of Berlin's city center is closed to car traffic – from Tiergarten via Unter den Linden to Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The BVG (public transport) increases its services. Spectators line the course; classic viewing points include the Victory Column, the Brandenburg Gate (finish line), and the intersections along Unter den Linden.
The 2026 edition on March 29th marked the 45th anniversary. Sponsors of the main run include Generali (title sponsor), Adidas, Garmin (timing), and Bett1.de. The 2027 race will take place on April 4th; registration is via a lottery system, which opens on April 2, 2026, and runs until May 28, 2026.
The 45th edition of the Berlin Half Marathon marked the event's 45th anniversary. Over 35,000 runners from around the world were registered, along with athletes in the wheelchair and handbike competitions, and inline skaters.
The course, as always, led from Tiergarten via Unter den Linden, Friedrichstraße, Karl-Liebknecht-Straße back to the Brandenburg Gate – Berlin's classic fast course. The top positions in the men's and women's races were decided around the 60-minute mark; full results are available on the official timing platform.
