Traditional fair on the historic island town — October 9th to 11th, 2026
The Gallusmarkt Hitzacker is one of the oldest and most traditional annual fairs in Lower Saxony. With its 429th edition in 2026, its history dates back to the late 16th century — making it one of the events firmly anchored in the DNA of the Elbe town. Celebrations run from Friday, October 9th, to Sunday, October 11th, 2026.
The venue is the Historic Island Town of Hitzacker — an island in the Elbe floodplain accessible by two bridges. The combination of half-timbered houses, Elbe flair, and fairground spectacle makes the market one of the most atmospheric folk festivals on the Elbe.
Program 2026 (key points, the detailed program will be published by the organizer in autumn):
The market's name derives from the feast day of Saint Gallus (October 16th) — traditionally a market day when rents and harvest dues were payable in the Middle Ages. Today, the wine harvest festival with wine queen on Sunday is a highlight: a late tribute to the harvest season and a social highlight for the region.
Historische Stadtinsel, 29456 Hitzacker (Elbe). By train: Hitzacker station. By car: B 191 from Dannenberg. Parking available on the mainland — the island is within walking distance.
Free admission.
The fireworks on Saturday evening can be best observed from the bridge and the Elbe riverbank.
