Diepholz Geese — City Emblem

The Diepholz goose is an old domestic goose breed named after the town of Diepholz. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the region was a centre for goose farming, and the Diepholz geese were considered particularly robust and flavourful. Today, the breed has become rare but is recognised as a threatened domestic animal breed of the year and is preserved by dedicated breeders. Gänsesonntag revives this tradition.

Sunday Shopping in the City Centre

Gänsesonntag combines tradition and city marketing: the shops in the city centre are open from 1 PM to 6 PM, allowing customers to browse and shop at their leisure. This makes the Sunday an important occasion for local retailers and, at the same time, a cosy autumn event for visitors from the region.

Goose Tombola with Diepholz Geese

The highlight of the day is the Goose Tombola, where one or more Diepholz geese are raffled as the main prize. The tombola charmingly recalls the tradition of goose farming and makes Gänsesonntag a unique event in the region. Tickets are distributed through the shops and the Fördergemeinschaft.

Fördergemeinschaft as Organiser

The Fördergemeinschaft Lebendiges Diepholz e.V. organises Gänsesonntag in cooperation with the town and local retailers. The association is committed to revitalising the city centre and promoting city marketing; Gänsesonntag is one of its most important annual events.
