Exceptional cross-country run through beach, tidal creeks, and mudflats near Schillig
The Friesenfestival is a multi-day event format organized by Wangerland Touristik GmbH in Schillig, combining sporting, cultural, and gastronomic elements. With the Friesencross, it incorporates a cross-country run that has gained attention far beyond the regional running scene.
The Friesencross leads through a landscape unusual for classic cross runs: the start and finish area is on Schillig beach, but the main part takes place in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. Runners will cross soft sand, navigate tidal creeks up to knee or hip height, and finally encounter the almost asphalt-like firm mudflat ground. This mix of terrains demands strength, sure-footedness, and mental fortitude.
As the run takes place in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park, the course is planned in close coordination with nature conservation authorities. Sensitive breeding areas are avoided, the start time depends on the tide, and trained mudflat guides accompany the run to ensure safety and environmental compatibility.
The Friesencross appeals to ambitious amateur and competitive runners. Participants travel from all over Northern Germany; the format is also known internationally. Spectators on the beach witness an unusual sight: hundreds of runners wading through tidal creeks and running across the mudflats, against the backdrop of the North Sea and the island of Wangerooge.
Schillig is the northernmost district of the Wangerland municipality and is known for its wide beaches and bird paradise. The Friesencross fits harmoniously into the location's profile as a nature-oriented, sporting destination.
The course combines soft sand, saltwater tidal creeks, and firm mudflat ground. The strain on knees, legs, and lungs is high – the reward is a natural experience unmatched by any other cross run. Those who wish to participate should have solid basic fitness and use old running shoes.
Around the run, the Friesenfestival offers additional program points: music on the beach, culinary delights, and activities for the runners' companions.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by Wangerland Touristik in the spring. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years:
