Weekly guided tours through the historic old town of Gifhorn from May to September
The Friday City Tours Gifhorn are a reliable part of the city's tourist offerings. Every Friday from 4 PM to 5 PM between May and September, the tours start at the agreed meeting point in the city center. For one hour, experienced city guides lead participants through the historic old town, conveying history, anecdotes, and current connections.
The focus of the city tour is the Gifhorn Renaissance Castle, built by Duke Franz of Brunswick-Lüneburg from 1525 onwards, which today houses the Historical Museum. The exterior grounds with the castle moat and castle park are explained, as are the interiors with their Renaissance architecture. The historic market square with the old town hall, St. Cyriacus Church, and the half-timbered houses of the old town are further stops.
The city guides are far more than mere information providers. They tell the stories of the city – of the dukes who lived in the castle, of the citizens who shaped the old town, of fires, reconstructions, and social changes. Anecdotes from medieval market life, from early modern council culture, and from recent city history bring the tour to life.
Gifhorn is located at the transition between the Lüneburg Heath and the Braunschweig region and, as a smaller district town, offers a good starting point for excursions into the region. The Renaissance Castle, the International Mill Museum on the outskirts, the recreational area around the Aller river, and the nearby heathlands are the main attractions. The city tours offer a compact introduction to the city's history.
The city tours follow a proven concept that conveys the city's most important sights and central historical connections in one hour. The tour is not overloaded but leaves enough room for questions and personal perception of the cityscape. Families with children, senior groups, and solo travelers are equally welcome.
For special occasions, thematic tours or special tours outside of regular hours can also be booked. Individual group tours and theme-specific tours – such as on Jewish history, industrial history, or the Reformation period – are available through Gifhorn-Touristik.
