Berlin's oldest open-air cinema tradition in Wedding – 1,500 seats under the open sky, four months of programming, new 4K projector in 2026
Volkspark Rehberge in Berlin's Wedding district (Mitte borough) was created in the 1920s as a recreational park. At its heart lies the old open-air stage, built in the 1950s, which today hosts one of Berlin's most atmospheric open-air cinemas. 1,500 seats on the former grandstand, a large screen, old trees all around – the setting is one of the cinema's trademarks.
The cinema season runs from mid-May to mid-September – almost four months, six days a week (closed Mondays). Most screenings start around 9:00 PM (earlier in early and late summer, around 8:30 PM). The program is a mix of current blockbusters, Berlinale premieres, curator-selected independent films, classic series, and specials like the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show 2026' at the season finale (September 12th).
The season opens on May 16th with the sci-fi film 'Mickey 17' (Director: Bong Joon-ho, starring Robert Pattinson). A highlight on June 26th: 'The Gold Rush' (Charlie Chaplin, 1925), presented in a brand-new 4K restoration – exactly 100 years after its world premiere in Los Angeles. Throughout the season, there will be accessible screenings (with audio description and subtitles via the Greta & Starks app) as well as special screenings like the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' with live performers.
Wedding is one of Berlin's most diverse neighborhoods with a long history of migration. Volkspark Rehberge forms its green heart. The U6 Rehberge subway station is located directly by the park. Those who want to go out after the film will find a lively bar and restaurant scene on Müllerstraße and the adjacent Seestraße.
The 2026 season kicks off on Saturday evening, May 16th, with 'Mickey 17' – the latest film by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho ('Parasite'), starring Robert Pattinson. The open-air cinema thus opens with a current blockbuster that perfectly matches its profile: films that attract audiences but are not stylistically arbitrary. The program will include current premieres, Berlinale favorites, and curated classics.
A technical milestone of the season: a new 4K projector significantly improves image quality. The cinema consistently utilizes this upgrade in its programming – on June 26th, Charlie Chaplin's 'The Gold Rush' (1925) will be shown in a brand-new 4K restoration, exactly 100 years after its world premiere in Los Angeles. A gift to the cinephile community.
