Enjoyment and culinary festival at the LWL-Open Air Museum Detmold — sustainable, organic, regional
With over 90 hectares of land and approx. 120 faithfully reconstructed buildings, the LWL-Open Air Museum Detmold is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. It showcases the history of rural life in Westphalia-Lippe from the 16th to the 20th century — farms, mills, blacksmiths, bakeries, schools, churches, all in real scale and in their historical function. Freilichtgenuss is one of the annual highlight events where the museum particularly highlights its concept as a living and enjoyment space.
Freilichtgenuss is curated as a "strolling mile for connoisseurs". Three values are at its core: sustainable, organic, regional. Exhibitors include organic farms, beekeepers, small breweries, dairies, bakeries, and manufacturers of liqueurs, jams, pestos, and fine specialties from the Lipperland, Sauerland, Münsterland, and Westphalia regions. Visitors can sample products, talk to the producers, and purchase goods.
The Freilichtgenuss weekend typically takes place on the first weekend of September — in 2026, on September 5 and 6. Program:
A special feature of the 2026 edition: On Friday, September 4, the LWL-Open Air Museum will be accessible with free admission — a gift to the region and the kickoff to the Freilichtgenuss days on September 5 and 6. Special admission prices apply during the Freilichtgenuss weekend.
The LWL-Open Air Museum is located on the southern outskirts of Detmold, at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest. It is operated by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL), which runs several Westphalian open-air museums (also in Hagen). Detmold itself is the district capital of the Lippe district — see also Detmolder Frühlingsfest. Freilichtgenuss attracts visitors from all over Westphalia-Lippe, the Sauerland, and the Münsterland — and positions the region as a sustainable enjoyment destination.
The Freilichtgenuss weekend, alongside the MuseumsAdvent, is one of the two signature events of the LWL-Open Air Museum Detmold. Enjoyment exhibitors, live demonstrations in the historic workshops, family program — all within the unique setting of the historic museum grounds.
