About Freilichtgenuss

On September 5 and 6, 2026, the LWL-Open Air Museum Detmold will become a strolling mile for connoisseurs: The Freilichtgenuss festival presents sustainable, organic, and regional producers from Westphalia-Lippe — at one of the largest open-air museums in Europe with historic farms, mills, and workshops. LWL-Open Air Museum Detmold — Westphalia's History You Can Touch

With over 90 hectares of land and approx. 120 faithfully reconstructed buildings, the LWL-Open Air Museum Detmold is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. It showcases the history of rural life in Westphalia-Lippe from the 16th to the 20th century — farms, mills, blacksmiths, bakeries, schools, churches, all in real scale and in their historical function. Freilichtgenuss is one of the annual highlight events where the museum particularly highlights its concept as a living and enjoyment space.

Concept — Sustainable, Organic, Regional

Freilichtgenuss is curated as a "strolling mile for connoisseurs". Three values are at its core: sustainable, organic, regional. Exhibitors include organic farms, beekeepers, small breweries, dairies, bakeries, and manufacturers of liqueurs, jams, pestos, and fine specialties from the Lipperland, Sauerland, Münsterland, and Westphalia regions. Visitors can sample products, talk to the producers, and purchase goods.

Program and Framework

The Freilichtgenuss weekend typically takes place on the first weekend of September — in 2026, on September 5 and 6. Program:

  • Stalls of selected organic and regional producers along the museum paths
  • Live demonstrations in the historic workshops (bakery oven, blacksmith, mill, dairy)
  • Tastings with producer discussions
  • Live music with folk and Westphalian traditional music
  • Family program with animal experiences (historic domestic animal breeds maintained by the museum)

Free Admission Day on September 4

A special feature of the 2026 edition: On Friday, September 4, the LWL-Open Air Museum will be accessible with free admission — a gift to the region and the kickoff to the Freilichtgenuss days on September 5 and 6. Special admission prices apply during the Freilichtgenuss weekend.

Detmold and the Museum

The LWL-Open Air Museum is located on the southern outskirts of Detmold, at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest. It is operated by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL), which runs several Westphalian open-air museums (also in Hagen). Detmold itself is the district capital of the Lippe district — see also Detmolder Frühlingsfest. Freilichtgenuss attracts visitors from all over Westphalia-Lippe, the Sauerland, and the Münsterland — and positions the region as a sustainable enjoyment destination.
