Traditional Spring Volksfest in the Berchtesgadener Land
The Freilassinger Maiwiesn is one of the largest spring festivals in southeastern Bavaria. When the festival tents are set up at the festival grounds by the train station in mid-May, visitors come from the entire Berchtesgadener Land district, the Salzburg basin, and the adjacent Bavarian districts to experience the ten-day Wiesn.
The festival tent of the Hanetzog festival family, with several hundred seats, is the heart of the Wiesn. Beer is served by the Schönramer brewery from the Upper Bavarian Rupertiwinkel – a private brewery that has been brewing in Petting near Waging am See since 1780 and is known far beyond the region for its beer specialties. In addition, amusement operators offer rides, shooting galleries, and candy stalls for families and young people.
Each festival day has its own theme: Neighborhood Day, Father's Day (particularly popular), Senior and Business Day with special discounts, Club Day with the participation of Freilassing clubs, and Festival Sunday. Additionally, on Fridays and Saturdays, after-Wiesn parties take place, running until 2 AM and attracting a young audience with DJ sets and live bands like »Backdraft«.
Freilassing is a town of 17,000 inhabitants in the Berchtesgadener Land district of Upper Bavaria, directly on the Saalach River opposite Salzburg, Austria. The town is a railway hub between Munich and Salzburg and one of the most important border crossings to Austria. This geographical location is also reflected in the festival audience: Bavarians and Austrians mingle at the Maiwiesn to form a uniquely cross-regional festival crowd.
The 2026 Maiwiesn in Freilassing spans ten festival days from May 8 to 17, 2026. The festival tent of the Hanetzok family serves beer from the Schönramer brewery and offers the full spectrum of Bavarian festival cuisine: roast chicken, grilled fish, pork roast, dumplings, and Weißwurst.
Each festival day has its own theme: from Neighborhood Day and Father's Day to Club Day. Festival-goers, the regional economy, and seniors receive special discounts on certain days. Additionally, on Fridays and Saturdays, after-Wiesn parties take place until 2 AM – with DJ sets and the live band Backdraft. Amusement operators with rides and candy stalls provide family entertainment.
The festival grounds are located directly at Freilassing train station, within walking distance. Excellent connections by train from Munich (1h15) or Salzburg (10 minutes). By car via the A8 (exit Bad Reichenhall) or the B304 from Salzburg.
Admission to the Maiwiesn is free.
Mid-May, ten festival days. Arrival in the late afternoon is recommended; on festival days, the festival tent opens at 2 PM, and the Volksfest party starts at 7 PM.
