Frechen Carnival — the whole town in Veedelszug mode

Frechen, southwest of Cologne, maintains its own distinct, lively carnival — several districts host their own parades on carnival weekend. In 2026, the carnival weekend runs from February 14th to 15th, 2026, with the highlight on Carnival Sunday.

Carnival Saturday, February 14th, 2026 — Königsdorf

The Frechen-Königsdorf carnival parade kicks things off on Saturday morning. Assembly from 9:30 AM — a relatively early carnival start time that puts the district in western Frechen in the spotlight.

Carnival Sunday, February 15th, 2026 — City Center

The main parade is the Frechen city center carnival parade on Sunday:

• Assembly — from 11:00 AM on Alfred-Nobel-Straße between Bonnstraße and Kölner Straße
• Parade start — 12:30 PM
• Parade end — approx. 4:30 PM
• Route — Alfred-Nobel-Straße → Hochstedenstraße → Othmarstraße → Hüchelner Straße → Freiheitsring → Dr.-Tusch-Straße → Hauptstraße → Bahnstraße → Franzstraße → Franz-Hennes-Straße → Matthiasstraße → Funkenstraße → Breite Straße

District Parades (Veedelszüge) in Bachem, Grefrath, and Habbelrath

Additionally, smaller Veedelszüge (Rhine dialect for 'neighborhood parades') will take place in the districts of Bachem, Grefrath, and Habbelrath during carnival weekend. These so-called Veedelszüge are the intimate, village-style form of Rhenish carnival — smaller than the main parade, but with an even more direct connection between participants and the audience.

Festkomitee Frechener Karneval e.V.

Behind the carnival parades is the Festkomitee Frechener Karneval e.V. — the umbrella organization of Frechen's carnival societies. It coordinates dates, assigns parade numbers, and develops safety concepts. The association sees itself as the guardian of Frechen's carnival traditions.

Frechen — Cologne's Outskirts with its Own Carnival

Frechen (approx. 53,000 inhabitants) is located in the Rhein-Erft district, southwest of Cologne. Despite its close proximity to the carnival metropolis, the town maintains its independent carnival. The historical connection to the stoneware and ceramics industry has shaped the bourgeoisie, who continue to drive the carnival today.
