Open Day and Fire Brigade Festival of the Sohren Volunteer Fire Brigade
The Sohren Volunteer Fire Brigade serves a Hunsrück community on the western edge of the Rhein-Hunsrück district — with special responsibility, as the proximity to Frankfurt-Hahn Airport means additional operational demands. The Open Day and Fire Brigade Festival are the annual opportunity to introduce the brigade's work to the public and, at the same time, to generate funds for the club's treasury.
The Open Day program is particularly aimed at families: Demonstration drills showcase the skills of the active brigade — typically a technical rescue operation on a prepared car, a house fire with a water cannon deployment, or a rescue from a height. Vehicle show with a fire engine, a water tender, and a crew transport vehicle, which can be viewed and often climbed on by children. Hands-on stations with a water spray wall for children, a bucket pump competition, and a quiz about fire safety.
The festival tent forms the social center. The firefighters themselves and their families handle the catering — bratwurst, spit-roasted pork, fries, potato pancakes, draft beer, wine, soft drinks, and a cake buffet on Sunday. Saturday evening traditionally features a dance night with a DJ or cover band, attracting visitors from far beyond the active fire brigade community.
Friendly fire brigades — from the neighboring communities of Niederweiler, Lautzenhausen, Büchenbeuren, Kirchberg, as well as the industrial fire brigade of Frankfurt-Hahn — come with their own delegations and vehicles. The festival thus also serves as an important networking event within the Hunsrück fire safety family.
The 2026 festival utilizes the Ascension Day weekend, which increases its Father's Day character and the likelihood of high visitor numbers. Open Day with live demonstration drills and family program during the day, convivial festival atmosphere in the evening with dance music.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: opening with a welcome, demonstration drills, vehicle show, hands-on activities, festival tent with catering, evening dance music.
