International Day of Music in the Raftsmen's Town on the Wurlsee
The Fête de la Musique originated in Paris in 1982 on the initiative of the then French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, and celebrates music every year on June 21st (Summer Solstice) with free open-air concerts. Today, over 540 cities worldwide participate. Lychen — the raftsmen's town in the north of the Uckermark — has been a firm part of the "Fête de la Musique Uckermark" network initiative for years.
On Sunday, June 21st, 2026, the concerts will start at 4:00 PM and continue into the late evening. The stages will be spread throughout the historic Lychen town center: at the market square, in the town park, in the courtyards of old burgher houses, in front of cafés, and on small squares by the Wurlsee. The variety of styles ranges from singer-songwriter to jazz, folk, and pop, to classical and choral music — and street drummers often perform as "Walking Acts" through the town.
The format is organized in the Uckermark as a regional network: In addition to Lychen, Templin, Prenzlau, and Schwedt also celebrate on June 21st — coordinated by Fête de la Musique Uckermark. The organizers are volunteer associations, the Lychen Tourist Office, the courtyard cafés (e.g., Hofcafé Vogelgesang), and local music clubs, financed by the Uckermark district and the town of Lychen.
Lychen, with around 3,100 inhabitants, is one of the smallest central towns in the Uckermark, nestled between seven lakes: Stadtsee, Großer Lychensee, Wurlsee, Großer Töppelsee, Kleiner Lychensee, Nesselpfuhl, and Zenssee. Lychen is known for rafting, which was an economic mainstay here until the 19th century — celebrated at the annual Raftsmen's Festival. The Fête de la Musique complements this summer cultural calendar with a modern, international day of music.
The Fête de la Musique Lychen 2026 will take place on Sunday, June 21st, 2026, starting at 4:00 PM — as every year on the international day of music at the Summer Solstice.
Several stages will be set up in the historic town center: at the market square, in the town park, in the courtyards of old burgher houses, and in some cafés (incl. Hofcafé Haus Vogelgesang). Local and regional artists from Lychen and the Uckermark will present their programs — from singer-songwriter and folk to jazz and pop, to classical and choral music.
The festival is integrated into the Fête de la Musique Uckermark network, which also plays simultaneously in Templin, Prenzlau, and Schwedt. The event is free and accessible with some considerations for mobility. Financed by the Uckermark district and the town of Lychen.
Note: The full program with names of all musicians and stage times will be published shortly before June 21, 2026, on fete-uckermark.de.
