Merry Carnival Parade on Carnival Sunday in Holler in the Westerwaldkreis with an after-parade party
The Fastnachtszug Holler is one of the festive highlights of the carnival season in the Westerwaldkreis. On Carnival Sunday, the small Westerwald community of Holler near Montabaur transforms into a stronghold of Fastnacht (carnival). Colourfully decorated floats, creative walking groups, and music bands parade through the village centre.
In 2026, the parade starts on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the festive time of 2:11 PM. Afterwards, the party tent on the Kirmesplatz (fairground) transforms into a lively party temple: the traditional After-Zoch-Party invites you to continue celebrating with "Helau" calls, music, and cool drinks.
The Westerwaldkreis has maintained a vibrant Rhenish carnival tradition for generations. Despite its location away from the well-known carnival strongholds of Cologne and Mainz, a distinct, village-influenced Fastnacht culture has developed in the Westerwald. The carnival clubs are usually deeply rooted in the village community and bring an astonishing amount of volunteer commitment to the streets year after year.
The municipality of Holler in the Montabaur administrative district is one of those Westerwald villages that cherish their carnival with particular dedication. For weeks, float construction groups work in barns and garages, dance troupes train in the community hall, and clubs like the fire department, sports clubs, and neighbourhood associations plan their contributions to the parade.
The Fastnachtszug moves along the main street through the village centre. Floats with thematic mottos, often with a wink at local politics or social criticism, alternate with walking groups in elaborate costumes. Fife and drum corps, Guggemusik bands, and carnival bands provide the necessary musical accompaniment. Throwing materials in the form of Kamelle (sweets), Kreppel (doughnuts), promotional items, and toys are generously tossed into the cheering crowd along the roadside.
After the parade, participants and spectators flock to the heated festival tent on the Kirmesplatz. There, the traditional After-Zoch-Party begins: live music or a DJ, popular Cologne-style party classics, and Westerwald carnival hits quickly get the atmosphere boiling. Until the late evening hours, people sing, sway, and dance.
The Fastnachtszug Holler is explicitly family-friendly. Children in costumes are the secret stars along the roadside, as the float crews particularly like to throw things in their direction. The manageable scale of the village parade ensures a relaxed atmosphere without crowding.
The Fastnachtszug Holler 2026 takes place on Sunday, February 8, at the festive start time of 2:11 PM. Colourful floats, costumed walking groups, and music bands parade through the village centre. Afterwards, the traditional After-Zoch-Party takes place in the festival tent on the Kirmesplatz, ensuring a great atmosphere until late evening.
