New Mainz Fastnacht session live from Gonsenheim — Cooperation GCV and SWR1 RLP
Mainz Fastnacht has a long tradition in its television media presentation. "Mainz bleibt Mainz, wie es singt und lacht" is the ZDF session that reaches millions of viewers annually; in addition, there are smaller and larger formats on SWR, OK-TV Mainz, and on social media. With Fastnacht in SWR1 — Die STREAMing — a new format is being created in 2026 that expands this tradition with a dedicated stream format: not a classic television broadcast, but a session conceived natively for the ARD Mediathek, combining the hall audience with the online reach of the stream.
The organizer is the Gonsenheimer Carneval-Verein "Schnorreswackler" 1892 e.V., one of the prominent Mainz Carnival clubs, whose hall Fastnacht expertise has been established for over 130 years. The media partner is SWR1 Rheinland-Pfalz, the public radio station with statewide reach, which complements its Fastnacht coverage with its own session format. The broadcast will be in the ARD Mediathek, making the format available regionally and long-term.
The program follows the classic structure of a Mainz costume session: session president, guard performances, speakers with political and social presentations in Mainz dialect, music and dance contributions, mood bands, and a final tableau with the traditional "Narrhallamarsch." The costume requirement in the hall is mandatory — the audience is part of the image that is also broadcast online and shapes the atmosphere of the session. The hall of the TGM Gonsenheim provides the appropriate setting: a proven Mainz Fastnacht hall with the necessary capacity and atmosphere for a media-accompanied format.
For the Mainz Fastnacht campaign 2026, Die STREAMing is a remarkable innovation. It shows how established Mainz clubs are further developing their tradition with modern media formats and reaching new target groups — young media users, Fastnacht fans outside of Mainz, international emigrants with ties to their homeland. For the hall audience, the evening remains a classic session experience with costumes, clapping, and swaying; for online viewers, a distinct streaming experience is created from the Mainz Fastnacht hall.
The 2026 premiere marks the birth of a new format in the Mainz Fastnacht media landscape. Unlike the established television sessions (ZDF, SWR-TV), Die STREAMing is conceived from the outset as a digital format using the ARD Mediathek as its platform. The hall audience is part of the staging, and their reactions — clapping, swaying, laughing — shape the atmosphere of the stream. The hall of the TGM Gonsenheim provides a classic Mainz hall setting with a stage, rows of tables, and a distinct hall Fastnacht character.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the GCV in January 2026. The structure follows the classic Mainz costume session dramaturgy: session president and welcome, guard performances, speakers in Mainz dialect, musical contributions, dance contributions, mood bands, final tableau with Narrhallamarsch.
