Grand carnival parade on Shrove Tuesday through the Bad Dürkheim city center followed by street carnival by the Derkemer Grawler
Fasching has deep roots in the Palatinate and is characteristically different from Rhenish Carnival and Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet. Palatinate Fasching – also called Derkemer Fasenacht – combines Rhenish joie de vivre with Palatinate dialect humor and culinary traditions like the Saumagen-Karneval. Bad Dürkheim, as a Palatinate spa town, is one of the most important Fasching locations, and the carnival parade on Shrove Tuesday is the undisputed highlight of the season.
The parade traditionally begins at 11:11 AM – the magical time for carnival-goers, which, with the fourfold eleven symbolism of the jesters, ironically alludes to the inversion of the world. Punctually at this time, the procession sets off from Wurstmarktplatz. Floats, music bands, dance groups, guards, men's and women's committees, children's groups, schools, and clubs march through the Bad Dürkheim city center in imaginative costumes. Spectators line the streets, collecting Kamelle and sweets, and celebrating the jesters with Helau shouts.
The route leads from Wurstmarktplatz – the holy ground of Bad Dürkheim's festival culture – via Kurbrunnenstraße, Weinstraße Nord, Schlossplatz, to Stadtplatz. This route goes through the city center and past all the important squares of the town. During the parade, the streets are closed to traffic, and the town transforms into a single grand stage of jester's joy.
After the parade, the city center transforms into a large street carnival until 6 PM. Stages, bars, mulled wine stands, and wine and beer stalls cater to the exuberant crowd of jesters. Live music, DJs, Palatinate dialect singers, and cover bands provide the atmosphere. The atmosphere is lively without tipping into the mass tourism of some Rhenish carnival strongholds – this is what makes the Bad Dürkheim Fasching particularly appealing to many.
The carnival club Derkemer Grawler is the central player in the Bad Dürkheim Fasching events. With its sessions, gala sessions, children's sessions, and the carnival parade, it shapes the entire carnival season and is an important custodian of Palatinate Fasching culture. The name Grawler refers to an old Palatinate term with a double entendre.
