Traditional Thanksgiving Festival in Dahn with Harvest Altar, Festival Service, and Customs
The Erntedankfest has deep roots. Even pre-Christian harvest festivals marked the end of the harvest season; Christianity adopted the ritual and gave it its present form: thanks to God for the fruits of the field, visible in the harvest altar with the gifts of the year. In Southern Germany and the Rhineland, the festival is celebrated on the first Sunday in October or the last Sunday in September.
The visual heart of the Erntedankfest is the harvest altar in the church. Farmers, beekeepers, millers, and gardeners from the community provide their gifts, which are arranged into an artistic composition by a group of dedicated individuals: sheaves of grain, loaves of bread, baskets of fruit and vegetables, pumpkins, honeycombs, grapes, medicinal herbs. The composition is both art and an expression of faith.
The centerpiece is the festival service, which expresses gratitude for the harvest. The sermon, readings, congregational singing, and blessing of the harvest gifts combine religious tradition with a concrete connection to the region's agriculture. In the Palatinate, there are both Catholic and Protestant Thanksgiving services.
A convivial gathering often follows the service: a lunch in the parish hall, coffee and cake in the community center, sometimes also a small Thanksgiving concert or a customs program. Thus, the religious festival also becomes a social event for the community.
Dahn is the tourist center of the Dahner Felsenland, a region where agriculture is no longer dominant but still present. Traditional orchards, honey from the Felsenland, regional fruits and vegetables from the community's gardens – the Erntedankfest makes this quiet presence of agriculture visible and fosters connection between town and country.
The festival is organized by the Dahn church communities in cooperation with the city. Current program details on dahn-veranstaltungen.de.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the church community in advance. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
