Traditional wine market since 1740 in the winzerhöfe (winemakers' courtyards) around the church
The roots of the Edesheim Jahrmarkt reach back to the 18th century. A market date in Edesheim was already documented in 1740. Over the centuries, its character has changed: from an agricultural market with livestock and goods trading to today's wine and folk festival. The continuous tradition over almost three centuries makes the Edesheimer Jahrmarkt one of the oldest continuously celebrated festivals in the Palatinate.
Since 1983, the festival has had its current concept: Instead of a central festival square, Edesheim's winemakers open their own courtyards around the church and serve their wines there. Guests stroll from courtyard to courtyard, tasting wines from different wineries and experiencing the historic architecture of the wine village up close. This concept has since become a model for several similar festivals in the region.
The opening on Friday is a tradition: The reigning Edesheim Wine Princess officially opens the Jahrmarkt, accompanied by the Kuckucksmusikanten Roschbach, one of the most renowned Palatinate brass bands. This combines representative customs with Palatinate musical tradition. The opening is one of the most visited program points every year.
Edesheim, with Edesheim Castle as its landmark, is one of the best-known wine-growing villages on the Südliche Weinstraße. The winemaking families have cultivated their vineyards over generations, and the Jahrmarkt is the annual showcase of their work. Many wineries use the festival to present new vintages to the public for the first time, making the market also interesting for wine lovers from the Rhine-Neckar region and Saarland.
The Jahrmarkt is equally a wine festival, a family celebration, and a traditional event. While wine connoisseurs embark on a tasting tour from courtyard to courtyard, the church square and the main street offer additional stalls with arts and crafts, snacks, and sweets. On Sundays, a Frühschoppen (morning pint) with Palatinate brass band music is on the program.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Edesheim municipal administration in late summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
