Worldwide unique: Horse races in the North Sea mudflats — August 9, 2026
For over a century, the Duhner Wattrennen has been a world-class equestrian curiosity: on a summer day in August, when the North Sea recedes at low tide, revealing the mudflats, the firm ground off Duhnen transforms into a horse racetrack. Trotting and galloping races alternate over distances of 1,400 to 2,500 m — against one of the most unusual sporting backdrops in the world.
The 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, August 9, 2026. The event runs from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM — the long preparation and aftermath phases are dictated by the tide conditions. The first race starts at approximately 1:30 PM, when the low tide phase allows for safe use of the mudflat racetrack.
The program features alternating trotting and galloping races — a rarely seen mix of two equestrian disciplines on a single event day. Distances vary between 1,400 m and 2,500 m depending on the race.
The Wattrennen is more than just an equestrian competition — it's a folk festival (Volksfest) with a festive atmosphere. Grandstands on the beach, food stalls, raffles, betting stands, and a diverse crowd enjoying the combination of equestrian sport, natural spectacle, and a summer day.
The organizer is the traditional Hamburger Renn-Club, which hosts the Duhner Wattrennen as its North German season highlight. The race dates must be set each year according to the tide calendar — making the Wattrennen a weather- and nature-dependent sporting event.
Duhnen is located directly on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea and has been a North Sea health resort since the 19th century. The Wattrennen, with origins dating back to 1902, is an expression of a long tradition of not only observing the mudflats but also using them for sport.
The exact 2026 race program will be published by the Hamburger Renn-Club in advance. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
Mudflats off Duhnen, 27476 Cuxhaven-Duhnen. Take the A 27 to Cuxhaven, then follow signs to Duhnen. Spectator areas on the dike and the beach.
Tickets available at duhner-wattrennen.de/eintrittskarten/. Grandstand and standing room tickets.
Wellington boots are not a cliché — the mudflats are wet. Bring sunscreen and water; the day is long. Cameras: bring telephoto lenses for the race distance.
