Christmas market in the spa gardens and city center of Bad Dürkheim with arts and crafts, nativity play, and Palatinate mulled wine
Bad Dürkheim, the spa town in the heart of the Mittelhaardt, is known in summer for its Wurstmarkt — the largest wine festival in the world. In December, the stage belongs to the Dürkheimer Advent: a Christmas market that spans four Advent weekends, transforming the spa gardens, town square, and Mannheimer Straße into a festive Christmas landscape. The combination of generous park grounds, historic city center, and Mediterranean cityscape makes the market a special experience — different from the large city markets, more intimate and wine-focused.
In the spa gardens, artisans from the Palatinate and the surrounding region set up their stalls. The offerings range from ceramics, glass, and jewelry to felt and textile work, wooden toys, candles, Christmas decorations, and Palatinate specialties. Many items are unique creations — the market is aimed at visitors looking for more than just industrially produced seasonal goods.
A special feature of the Dürkheimer Advent is the traditional nativity play in the spa gardens, which atmospherically brings the Christmas story closer to families and children. In addition, there are choir performances, brass ensembles, bands, and appearances by local clubs. Musical accompaniment is provided on most days; the exact stage program is published by the city in advance.
The mulled wine in Bad Dürkheim is brewed from regional Palatinate Riesling and Spätburgunder — which tastes distinctly different from the industrial mulled wine found at many Christmas markets. In addition, there are white mulled wine variations, Glühschorle (mulled wine spritzer), Palatinate Federweißer punch, and non-alcoholic alternatives. The food menu includes Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Bratwurst (grilled sausage), Flammkuchen (tarte flambée), Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), chestnuts, Palatinate Lebkuchen (gingerbread), and winter sweets.
The 2026 edition of the Dürkheimer Advent follows the proven structure: four consecutive Advent weekends, each from Friday to Sunday, in the spa gardens and along the central shopping streets. The first weekend (Nov 27–29) marks the opening; on the following three weekends (Dec 03–06, Dec 10–13, Dec 17–20), the market extends from Friday to Sunday each time.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in early autumn. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: arts and crafts market in the spa gardens, nativity play and family program, Palatinate mulled wine stands, and a varied stage program with choirs, brass bands, and bands.
Specific program items, band times, and concert dates will be published by the city of Bad Dürkheim on the official website and in tourism publications before the festival begins.
Admission to the Christmas market is free. Mulled wine, food, and goods are paid for at the stalls.
