Traditional town festival in honour of the Königslutter tuffstone lager beer Duckstein with barrel tapping and live music
The history of Duckstein beer dates back to the 17th century. It is an amber-coloured lager beer with its own mild, spicy character, first brewed in Königslutter and named after the surrounding tuffstone deposits. Since 2013, the brand has belonged to the Carlsberg Group but is still marketed today with its Königslutter heritage.
Tradition dictates that the mayor or a high-ranking guest opens the festival with a ceremonial barrel tapping. With a mighty hammer blow, the tap is driven into the barrel — the start of two intensive festival days.
Live bands and DJs alternate on the festival stage in the city centre. The programme features cover hits, party music, rock classics, and, in the late evening, disco formats. The dance floor remains open until the early hours.
Local landlords, restaurateurs, and associations set up stalls. On offer: bratwurst, grilled chicken, North German specialities, vegan and vegetarian options, sweets, coffee and cake — and of course, Duckstein from the tap in its various varieties.
The organiser is the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Königslutter, which has been dedicated to preserving Königslutter's history and promoting tourism in the city for decades. The Carlsberg Group, as the owner of the brand, supports the festival financially and logistically.
Königslutter am Elm, like few other cities in the region, combines several cultural identities. Here lies the Romanesque Imperial Cathedral of Lothar III, here Duckstein was brewed for centuries, here the Elm ridge shapes the landscape. The Ducksteinfest combines the beer tradition with the city's self-image.
The exact band line-up for 2026 will be published by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Königslutter shortly before the festival date on koenigslutter.de. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
