Dragon boat races at Pentecost on the Maschsee with a sporting character and folk festival atmosphere on the shore
The Maschsee is Hannover's largest lake near the city center and a central recreational area. With its 78 hectares of water surface, the 6 km long promenade, and direct access to Maschpark, it forms an ideal venue for water sports events. The Dragon Boat Festival utilizes a sprint course running along the lake, where the start and finish are equipped with grandstands, scoreboards, and a pavilion for the race management.
The teams come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Traditional dragon boat clubs – such as the Drachenboot-Club Hannover – provide the most athletically trained crews. Company teams use the festival as a team-building occasion and compete in their own categories. University teams from Leibniz University, Hannover University of Applied Sciences, and other educational institutions are represented, as are private teams, groups of friends, and sports initiatives. The diversity of teams ensures competitive excitement across all levels.
The sprint races are short and intense – usually 200 or 500 meters, each course lasting only a few minutes. Several boats start simultaneously; the drummer in the bow sets the pace with loud beats, and the paddlers respond with synchronized movements. Losing the rhythm means losing the race. The atmosphere on the shore is captivating – cheers, club flags, music, applause, and occasionally small live broadcasts via loudspeakers.
Food stalls, bars, live music stages, and club pavilions are spread along the race course. Classic festival cuisine – bratwurst, fries, crêpes, ice cream, burgers – is complemented by international offerings, vegetarian and vegan options, and Asian snacks, referencing the Chinese origin of dragon boats. Bands, DJs, and acoustic artists provide musical accompaniment during breaks between competitions.
The festival is aimed at all generations. Families will find seating along the shore, hands-on activities for children, simple play areas, and an overall relaxed environment. Those not interested in dragon boat racing can simply enjoy the Pentecost Sunday by the lake in Hannover – the Maschsee is one of the city's most popular meeting spots anyway.
The Dragon Boat Festival has its roots in the Chinese Duanwu Festival, which was established over 2,000 years ago. Today, dragon boat races are held worldwide, and Germany also has a vibrant scene with national and regional championships. Hannover is among the German cities with an active dragon boat community.
