Whitsun weekend with kite flying and family program in the Berner Moor
The Berner Moor in the southern Wesermarsch is an open, wide landscape where the wind is hardly broken. This is precisely what makes it an ideal location for a kite festival. Over the Whitsun weekend, the moorland landscape transforms into a huge playground for kite pilots and curious spectators. Colorful kites of all sizes — from handy family models to large image-carrying objects — fill the vast North German sky.
Whit Sunday traditionally begins with a Low German church service in the festival tent — a connection to the deeper tradition of Whitsun in the Moor. Afterwards, the kite and family program starts: hands-on activities for children, a kite-building workshop, demonstrations by experienced pilots, and live music alternate. Food stalls provide refreshments with bratwurst, fries, coffee, cake, draft beer, and non-alcoholic drinks.
The kite festival is explicitly family-friendly. Those who don't bring their own kite can often borrow one or build one themselves. Older visitors simply enjoy the sight of the colorful kites dancing in the wind and the relaxed Whitsun atmosphere of the moor. The event is organized by volunteers from the Berner Festgemeinschaft and is part of the long-standing "Pfingsten im Moor" format.
The 2026 edition falls on the Whitsun weekend from May 23 to 25. The Berner Festgemeinschaft is organizing the kite festival with the tried-and-tested mix of a church opening, family program, and a lively Whitsun party.
The open moor landscape makes the festival visually special: anyone looking at the horizon will see colorful kites in the sky everywhere — a symbol of the open expanse of the North German marshland.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Free admission.
Berne is located in the southern Wesermarsch between Bremen and Oldenburg. Arrive via the B 212. Alternatively, take the Berne-Farge ferry from Bremen. Parking is signposted near the festival grounds.
The kite festival takes place mainly outdoors in the moor. Weatherproof clothing, sturdy footwear, and possibly a blanket are recommended. In case of rain, the program will be adapted, and the festival tent offers covered areas.
Bratwurst, fries, potato pancakes, coffee, cake, draft beer, and non-alcoholic drinks are offered on site.
