34th Kite Festival with 400–500 Kites on Norddeich Beach during Ascension
When the first colorful large kites take to the skies at the beginning of May on Norddeich Beach, one of the most spectacular Volksfeste (public festivals) on the East Frisian North Sea coast begins: the Kite Festival by the Sea. The 34th edition in 2026 will take place from May 14th to 17th over the Ascension weekend. The venue is the spacious beach with a view of the Wadden Sea – ideal conditions for the typical fresh North Sea breeze.
Over 100 international kite athletes travel here annually. They bring 400 to 500 kites, from classic stunt kites to large structures like meter-long octopuses, kite rays, manta rays, and choreographed multi-line formation teams. Those who only know kites as toys will experience artistry and sport combined here.
The emotional highlight is the evening flight show on Saturday at 10 PM. Illuminated kites float over the dusky beach, often accompanied by music – a unique spectacle that captivates thousands of spectators. Those visiting Norddeich this weekend should secure a spot on the beach in good time.
Specifically for children, there are kite-building workshops, games, and hands-on activities in the Okka Kids Club. Tourism Norddeich thus makes the festival a family-friendly experience. Free admission to the beach area – gastronomy and kite sales stands complement the experience.
The 34th edition makes the kite festival one of the oldest continuously held kite sports events in Germany. The international kite festival community meets on Norddeich's beach for the season opener – many Dutch, Belgian, and British teams are also regularly represented.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by Tourismus Norddeich shortly before the weekend. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Grünstrand Norddeich, 26506 Norden-Norddeich (Aurich District, North Sea Coast).
Thursday to Sunday, May 14–17, 2026 (Ascension Weekend).
Free admission. Kite-building workshops in the Okka Kids Club may incur a small material fee.
Evening flight show with illuminated kites on Saturday, May 16th, around 10 PM – a must-see for all visitors.
Norddeich is a ferry port for Juist and Norderney and is well connected by train (terminal station Norddeich Mole) and car via the B 70 / B 72. Parking spaces are designated at the beach.
