A colorful summer city festival in the historic old town on the edge of the Northern Black Forest
The Dornstetten City Festival takes place every summer in the historic old town of Dornstetten – a former free imperial city in the District of Freudenstadt on the edge of the Northern Black Forest. The half-timbered backdrop around the market square, the former town hall, and St. Martin's Church provide the perfect setting for a traditional civic festival that unites the entire community.
In 2026, "d'SchwobeBrasser" will perform on the market square stage and the cover project "Projekt 0-600" on the church square stage (both starting at 8 PM) – a mix of Swabian brass power and rock classics. The Dornstetten town band accompanies the festival procession and provides atmospheric morning pint music on Sunday.
The play street on Marktstraße is the heart of the Sunday program: Dornstetten clubs set up stations for skill games, crafts, physical activities, and small competitions. In the afternoon, all participating children receive their awards. In the background, there will be performances by local kindergartens and small musical interludes.
As with any good Swabian city festival, the local clubs take care of the catering. You can enjoy Maultaschen, Saitenwürste, Bratwurst, fries, Swabian specialties, and sample regional wines, beers, and non-alcoholic drinks. The proceeds go back into the clubs' activities – a classic win-win in the imperial city.
The Dornstetten City Festival is the perfect opportunity to get to know the medieval old town with its half-timbered houses, the market fountain, and the narrow alleys. Those with more time can combine their visit with a hike at Karpfensee lake, an excursion to the nearby Freudenstadt Mountain Bike Park, or a drive along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße scenic route.
The Dornstetten City Festival 2026 takes place on the weekend of July 11 and 12, 2026, in the historic old town. Free admission.
On Saturday, the festival opens at 6:45 PM with the fanfare procession. Around 7 PM, the mayor officially opens the event and performs the traditional keg tapping. From 8 PM, two bands play simultaneously: "d'SchwobeBrasser" on the market square stage and "Projekt 0-600" on the church square stage.
Sunday begins at 10 AM with an ecumenical service. This is followed by kindergarten performances, and from 11:30 AM, the clubs' play street opens. In the afternoon, brass music will play for the morning pint, and around 3:30 PM, the award ceremony for the play street stations will take place. The festival ends at 4 PM.
Dornstetten is located on the B28 between Freudenstadt and Horb am Neckar. Dornstetten train station (Stuttgart–Freudenstadt line) is in the Aach district; from there, it's about a 15-minute walk or a shuttle bus ride to the old town.
Free admission.
As in previous years, a shuttle bus will run between the designated parking lots and the old town during the festival weekend. Car parking around the old town is limited – traveling by train or bus is recommended.
Arrive in the old town before 6:45 PM on Saturday to witness the fanfare procession and the mayor's keg tapping.
