Guided tour through Worms' smallest district on the Rhine
Ibersheim is by far the smallest of Worms' eleven districts and is located in the north on the right bank of the Rhine. Characterised by the flat, fertile floodplain of the Old Rhine, the place is an agriculturally shaped settlement with a historically pronounced Mennonite tradition. Today, Ibersheim has around 530 inhabitants and, despite formal incorporation, retains a distinctly village character.
Ibersheim is one of the oldest Mennonite settlements in Germany. In the 17th century, religious refugees from Switzerland and Alsace settled in the village. A Mennonite community with its own meeting room still exists today. This religious-historical dimension makes Ibersheim an attraction for study trips from home and abroad.
The village tour starts at the car park of the local administration and leads through the historic village centre. Stops include the sacred buildings, old farmsteads, the former manor house, the Mennonite church, and selected viewpoints overlooking the Old Rhine. Local guides will talk about the settlement's history, religious communities, agriculture, and its connection to Worms' city history.
In addition to the village tour, the local administration organises other events — from the concert series 'Text und Ton' to the district festival and the Mennonite history exhibition. Current information can be found on worms.de under the district Ibersheim.
The village tour on August 25, 2026, takes advantage of the late summer evening hours for a leisurely stroll through Ibersheim. Topics include the settlement history, the Mennonite tradition, and the connection to the Old Rhine.
With around 530 inhabitants, Ibersheim is the smallest district of Worms and has its own Mennonite community, whose roots date back to the 17th century.
