Summery fire brigade festival in the Bavarian Forest
The Hötzdorf Volunteer Fire Brigade is more than just a relief organization – it is the social backbone of the small district of Hutthurm. In the Bavarian Forest, in the Passau district, the FFW not only takes care of fire protection but also fulfills central social tasks: it organizes festivals, keeps customs alive, and forms a meeting point for all generations. The annual Dorffest is the highlight of club life and, at the same time, the most important source of income for the voluntary work.
The festival traditionally takes place around the Hötzdorf FFW equipment house. A festival tent is set up here, a bar and catering facility is established, and a small festival area is created for visitors. The FFW members themselves handle service, catering, and organization. The donations received directly benefit the fire brigade's equipment. Those who celebrate along support the voluntary commitment of the brigade – an idea that is deeply rooted in many Bavarian village communities.
The menu features classic Bavarian festival specialties: pork knuckle, sausages, grilled fish, potato salad, sauerkraut, and sweet treats. The beer is served by a regional brewery from Lower Bavaria. A brass band from the surrounding area provides the musical accompaniment with Bavarian folk music, march music, and traditional dances. For children, there is usually a bouncy castle and play activities.
Hötzdorf is a small district of the Bavarian market town of Hutthurm, located in the Passau district between the Bavarian Forest and the Danube-Inn hill country. The municipality of Hutthurm has around 5,800 inhabitants and is characterized by a dense network of clubs: in addition to the Hötzdorf FFW, there are several fire brigades, traditional costume associations, and music groups that shape social life. The village festival in Hötzdorf is one of several similar festivals that take place in the market area throughout the year – the *Sonnwendfeuer of FFW Hutthurm* on June 20, 2026, is also part of this tradition.
A visit to the village festival can be combined with a hiking tour in the nearby Bavarian Forest. Hutthurm offers numerous hiking trails, viewpoints, and places to stop for refreshments. The nearby city of Passau, about 15 km away, is the cultural center of the region and ideally complements a weekend stay in the Hutthurm area.
The 2026 Dorffest of the FFW Hötzdorf will take place on Sunday, June 28, at the equipment house. The local FFW team is organizing the festival tent, food and drink stands, as well as the musical program. Typical Bavarian dishes such as pork knuckle, sausages, and sweet treats will be served, and a brass band from the surrounding area will provide live music. Families from Hutthurm, Hötzdorf, and the surrounding villages will come together to preserve customs and support the voluntary work of the fire brigade. Further in the 2026 event calendar is also the Sonnwendfeuer of FFW Hutthurm on June 20 in the nature and fruit learning garden.
Admission is free. Food and drinks are priced on-site by the FFW – the proceeds go directly to the club's activities and the fire brigade's equipment.
