143 German championship titles in 24 sports over four days – multisport event with largely free admission
Die Finals were launched in 2019 to bundle the German championships from numerous individual sports into a joint sporting event with high media attention. Instead of being spread throughout the year, the championships take place over four days in a single city. Hannover already hosted in 2024 and will again be the host in 2026. Hannover was chosen due to its dense inner-city sports infrastructure and experience in event management.
Over four days, a total of 143 German championship titles will be awarded in 24 sports. The program ranges from athletics, swimming, and gymnastics to canoeing, rowing, triathlon, and archery, as well as BMX, 3x3 basketball, table tennis, trampoline gymnastics, and karate. New to the program are beach volleyball, weightlifting, Ju-Jutsu, rapid surfing, speed windsurfing, and water polo.
A key characteristic of Die Finals is their location close to the city center. Competition venues are set up temporarily in the city whenever possible: 3x3 basketball on Trammplatz, triathlon at Maschsee, BMX on the Eilenriede course, surfing competitions at a specially constructed facility. The majority of the competition venues are free to access; tickets are only sold for selected indoor events.
ARD and ZDF will broadcast live alternately throughout the entire duration of Die Finals. Around one hundred hours of live coverage are expected in total. This makes Die Finals the largest continuous sports broadcast by public broadcasters outside of the Olympic Games and major football tournaments.
For Die Finals, Hannover offers its dense sports infrastructure: Maschsee as a natural stadium for water sports, Eilenriede as an urban forest for athletics disciplines, city squares for street sports formats like 3x3 basketball and BMX, and classic halls for gymnastics, table tennis, and martial arts.
The exact competition venues and schedules per sport will be communicated in advance by the respective federations and the state capital. An overview will be published on diefinals.de and the Hannover sports website.
Interactive stations for the public, talks with athletes, sports demonstrations in the city center, integration with the overlapping Maschseefest.
