One of the biggest Fastnacht balls in Mainz on Fastnachtssamstag in Gonsenheim
The Mainz Fastnacht is regionally known primarily for its hall Fastnacht sessions and its large Rosenmontag parade. Less visible, but just as important in the Mainz festival calendar, are the numerous Fastnacht balls that take place in the last days of the campaign in the halls of the city and its districts. DER BALL — The Night of the Fools — is one of the largest and most renowned of these balls. The organizer is the Gonsenheimer Carneval-Verein „Schnorreswackler" 1892 e.V., which, with over 130 years of club history, is one of the oldest Mainz Carnival clubs and is firmly rooted in Gonsenheim, one of the tradition-conscious western districts.
The venue is the Große Turnhalle of the TGM (Turngemeinde 1861) Gonsenheim — a central meeting place in the district, which is transformed into a multi-hall dance landscape for the ball. The main stage in the large hall features live bands that mix the classic hall Fastnacht repertoire with current hits. Other halls and rooms offer DJ floors with different music styles — from Mainz party music and Carnival hits to Schlager and mainstream, to younger dance formats for the younger generation. Guggemusik ensembles roam between the rooms, providing the spontaneous, loud moments that are part of Mainz hall Fastnacht.
Costumes are mandatory — guests without costumes will not be admitted at the hall entrance. This rule is binding in the Mainz ball cosmos and shapes the image of the evening: thousands of costumed guests, from simple partygoers to elaborate themed costumes, from group costumes to classic Pierrots, Harlequins, and Bajazzi. The atmosphere is intense, exuberant, tradition-conscious — Fastnachtssamstag in Mainz means the hot final phase before Rosenmontag, and balls like DER BALL form the social highlight of this phase.
The organizers — the GCV Gonsenheim with its Schnorreswacklers — are among the defining clubs of Mainz hall Fastnacht. Their sessions (especially the costume session broadcast live on SWR1) are known beyond the region, and their ball on Fastnachtssamstag concludes the campaign with a final major hall event before the street carnival from Sunday to Ash Wednesday. For Mainz ball-goers, DER BALL is a must-attend event — and for Carnival enthusiasts from the entire region, an opportunity to experience the intense Mainz ball atmosphere in its purest form.
The 2026 edition falls on February 14 — Fastnachtssamstag — and thus on the start of the most intense phase of the Mainz Fastnacht campaign, during which the major street parades of the weekend (Youth Masked Parade on Saturday, district parades on Sunday, Rosenmontag Parade on Monday) dominate public spaces, while the balls shape the evening and night scene. DER BALL is designed as a large-scale event in the Große TGM Hall; the concept is based on several halls with different music styles played in parallel, allowing guests to switch between dance floors throughout the night and create their own individual program.
The exact program and lineup of bands and DJs for 2026 will be published by the GCV in January 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: main stage with Mainz party bands and live acts of hall Fastnacht, parallel DJ floors with Schlager, mainstream, Carnival hits, and younger dance formats, Guggemusik ensembles as roaming performance groups between the halls.
