Open-Air Culture Picnic on the Streuobstwiesen Jesteburg, Kultursommerpreis 2026
Streuobstwiesen are among the most species-rich and ecologically valuable cultural landscapes in Central Europe. With their old, high-stemmed fruit trees, extensive meadow use, and traditional management, they provide habitats for hundreds of animal and plant species. In Jesteburg, the Natur- und Kulturinitiative Streuobstwiesen is committed to preserving this cultural landscape.
The Culturpicnic takes place as a single event on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The early autumn date is not chosen by chance: the apple, pear, and plum harvest is in full swing, and the Streuobstwiesen are at their most beautiful.
The concept of the Culturpicnic is simple and inviting: visitors bring their own picnic blankets and baskets to the Streuobstwiesen, spread out, enjoy nature, and the togetherness. Catering stands also offer regional products from Streuobstwiesen management: fresh fruit, apple juice, cider, liqueurs, cakes with preserved fruits.
Musical contributions, readings, short concerts, and cultural activities complement the picnic into a multi-dimensional experience. Local musicians, choirs, and solo artists perform in the special setting of the Streuobstwiesen. The music becomes a natural accompaniment to the picnic.
Guided walks through the Streuobstwiesen impart knowledge about their ecological importance, historical use, and biodiversity. Workshops on apple juice pressing, fruit variety identification, and Streuobstwiesen maintenance make the event an educational and nature conservation event.
The award of the Kultursommerpreis 2026 recognizes the innovative combination of nature conservation, cultural work, and social interaction. The project impressively implements the motto "Neue Wege" (New Paths) by discovering one's own homeland landscape as a stage for cultural encounters.
The 2026 edition is a special summer culture event with a dual ecological and cultural focus. Streuobstwiesen, like throughout Germany, are an endangered cultural landscape in Lower Saxony – their preservation requires active care and public attention.
The Culturpicnic creates precisely this attention by making the Streuobstwiesen an experienceable stage for cultural encounters, thereby bringing their beauty and value to public awareness.
