Autumn Craftsmen's Market in the historic ambiance of the Mühlenmuseum Gifhorn
The International Mill Museum Gifhorn is one of Northern Germany's most extraordinary museum complexes. Over several decades, mills from all over the world – including from the Netherlands, Russia, Greece, Portugal, and Korea – have been rebuilt in their original form on extensive open-air grounds on the outskirts of the city. In addition, there are historic farm buildings, workshops, a church, and a bread house, making the site a walkable museum village. The market uses this extraordinary backdrop as its setting.
The Craftsmen's Market is aimed at visitors who appreciate handmade products beyond mass-produced goods. Pottery, woodwork, jewelry, textile art, leather goods, glasswork, candles, natural cosmetics, and culinary specialties from small manufacturers make up the assortment. The selection of exhibitors is made by the museum and emphasizes quality, regional connection, and craftsmanship substance.
The Mill Museum hosts two craftsmen's markets per year: one in May with a Mother's Day theme and one in September as an autumnal counterpart. While the May market is more spring-oriented, emphasizing plants, seasonal products, and gifts, the September market has an autumnal-seasonal character with harvest festival connections, candles, warm fabrics, and winter gift ideas.
Gifhorn is located at the transition between the Lüneburg Heath and the Braunschweig region. In addition to the Mill Museum, the historic 16th-century castle, the old town with its market square, and the recreational area around the Aller river are also attractions. A visit to the market can be combined with a city tour or a walk along the water.
The September weekend marks one of the annual highlights in the Mühlenmuseum's event calendar. Between the mills gathered from around the world, in the courtyards and squares of the museum village, around forty to sixty stalls will be set up. The autumnal focus of the market is reflected in the assortment and atmosphere: candles, warm fabrics, harvest festival decorations, winter gift ideas, and seasonal products are at the forefront.
The supporting program is also family-friendly. Traditional bread is baked and sold in the bread house, demonstrations take place in the workshops, and children can explore the extensive grounds. The museum restaurant provides catering for visitors.
