Traditional Kirchweih in the Cochem district of Cond on the Moselle riverbank
Cond is located on the Moselle riverbank opposite Cochem's old town and is connected via the Skagerrak Bridge and the historic Reichsburg Bridge. Despite its immediate proximity to the tourist magnet Cochem, the district has retained its own, quieter character. The Conder Kirmes is an expression of this independent identity: while the big summer festivals attract attention over in the old town, Cond celebrates its own festival in a familiar, smaller circle.
The Kirmes has the classic format of a Rhineland-Palatinate Kirchweih. A festival tent of several local clubs forms the center, with a few rides around it – usually a small carousel for children, a sweets stand, perhaps a shooting gallery or a throwing game stall. The catering is provided by the clubs themselves: Bratwurst, Currywurst, fries, Schnitzel, Schmalzbrot (lard bread), accompanied by wine from the Cochem vineyards, beer, Schorle (mixed wine and soda), and lemonade. Bands and DJs alternate on stage; the program remains manageable, with the focus on meeting neighbors and acquaintances.
The Conder Kirmes is not a tourist magnet, but an authentic district festival. Visitors experiencing the festival should be prepared for many conversations to be held in Cochem's Moselle Franconian dialect and for the atmosphere to be more familial than at the large festivals in the old town. This is precisely what makes it appealing: it shows the other Cochem that exists beyond the Reichsburg postcards and maintains its own rhythm. The program typically follows the pattern of opening and dance night on Friday evening, main festival day on Saturday, and family day with Frühschoppen (morning pint) on Sunday.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the city of Cochem and the Cond clubs in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Opening on Friday evening (if a Friday date is scheduled) or Saturday morning, festival tent concert on Saturday evening, family day with Frühschoppen on Sunday, and festival closing late Sunday evening.
