Grand Rose Monday Parade of the Cochemer Karnevalsgesellschaft 1848/49 e.V. through the Old Town
The Cochemer Karnevalsgesellschaft 1848/49 e.V. is one of the oldest carnival societies in Germany. Its founding years fall in the mid-19th century, when the organized carnival movement spread through the Rhineland, and associations were formed in many Moselle and Eifel towns to channel the carnival activities in an orderly fashion. The Rosenmontagszug, which the CKG still organizes every year, is one of the largest carnival parades in the Cochem-Zell district and attracts thousands of visitors to the Moselle Old Town.
The parade typically starts at 2 PM and follows a route through the central streets of the Old Town. Usually, dance troupes and music bands lead the way, followed by the CKG floats with the royalty – Prince and Princess, Children's Prince and Princess, Senate – and the procession of friendly carnival associations from the Cochem-Zell district and neighboring regions. Cochem institutions, schools, clubs, and companies present further floats and walking groups, often designed with local references, political satire, and lovingly crafted original creations. Sweets (Kamellen), small bouquets (Strüssjer), candies, and small gifts are thrown from the floats into the crowds lining the streets.
Those who wish to experience the parade should secure a spot along the route early. The narrow streets of the Moselle Old Town offer less space than the wide streets of large cities, and spectators crowd closely at the narrow points. Carnival costumes are a must, and a bag for collecting sweets is recommended. After the parade, the festivities move to Cochem's restaurants and pubs, which host the evening with carnival music, cocktails, Kölsch beer, and small snacks. Admission is free.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Cochemer Karnevalsgesellschaft 1848/49 e.V. in January/February. The structure will follow the proven key points of previous years: float assembly in the morning, parade start at 2 PM, parade duration approx. two to two and a half hours, followed by carnival parties in Cochem's restaurants and pubs late into the night.
