Advent market at the church square with a musical program in the St. Johannis-der-Täufer town church
With the Walsrode Monastery and the St. Johannis-der-Täufer town church, Walsrode boasts two impressive landmarks that unfold a special atmosphere during Advent. The Christmas Magic utilizes this backdrop to offer a contemplative Christmas market, distinctly shaped by the parish. In contrast to larger commercial markets, the focus here is on community and volunteer engagement.
Numerous wooden stalls will be set up on the church square over the weekend, where artisans, associations, and non-profit organizations will offer their products. The culinary offerings range from mulled wine and hot apple punch to bratwurst and potato pancakes, as well as waffles, crêpes, and homemade cookies. Inside the town church and the monastery community center, concerts, devotions, and readings will take place throughout the three days. The brass choir, the church choir, and guest ensembles from the region will perform in various formations.
The Christmas Magic is more than just a tourist event: it is a meeting point for the parish and the city's population alike. Many Walsrode residents associate the market with personal memories of shared Advent weekends, encounters with neighbors, and the church concerts. The proceeds from sales at individual stalls traditionally flow into community and diaconal projects.
The St. Johannis-der-Täufer town church dates back to the Middle Ages in its oldest parts and, together with the former Walsrode Monastery, forms a significant architectural ensemble. Visitors to the Christmas Magic can also explore the church rooms between market visits, thus combining Advent atmosphere with cultural history.
The second Advent weekend is traditionally reserved for the Christmas Magic in Walsrode. The market combines the offering of crafts and culinary specialties outdoors with a spiritual and musical program inside the town church. It thus consciously distinguishes itself from purely commercial Christmas markets and retains its character as a community Advent festival.
Participants include the town church's choir (Kantorei), the local brass choir (Posaunenchor), and guest ensembles from the Heidekreis region. Specific program details will be published in late autumn.
