Traditional Advent market with over 50 exhibitors in the historic half-timbered old town
Kirchberg, the oldest town in the Hunsrück with just under 4,500 inhabitants, boasts one of the best-preserved half-timbered old town centers in the region. Narrow alleys, carved beams, crooked gables, the decorative tower of the town church — the architecture provides an ideal backdrop for an Advent market. The Christkindmarkt on the 2nd Advent weekend has consistently utilized this setting for years.
The over 50 exhibitors are spread across the market square and the adjoining alleys — not a concentrated market area, but a stroll-oriented route that leads visitors through the entire old town. This distribution creates an intimate atmosphere and prevents the typical market square congestion of larger Advent markets.
The crafts on offer are remarkably diverse: ceramics from Westerwald and Eifel, silk paintings in a hand-painted technique, glass art (blown, cut, colored), jewelry made from precious metals and natural materials, as well as wood carvings, felt, knitwear, leather goods, and Advent decorations. The selection of vendors is curated by the town of Kirchberg — industrial goods are largely avoided.
Culinary, the market offers an unusual specialty: wild boar on a spit or as bratwurst — a direct reference to the hunting tradition of the Hunsrück and its extensive forests. Alongside this, classic Hunsrück bratwurst, spit-roasted pork, tarte flambée, potato pancakes, mulled wine, eggnog, gingerbread, and candied almonds.
For families, there is a children's carousel right in front of the half-timbered houses, a visit from St. Nicholas with gifts, as well as craft and storytelling activities. Lighting, small light installations on the houses, and the glow of the market stalls create a special atmosphere in the evening.
The 2026 Christkindmarkt will continue the successful concept: curated selection of vendors, decentralized distribution throughout the old town, regional culinary specialties (especially wild boar bratwurst), a visit from St. Nicholas, and a children's carousel.
The exact program for 2026 (market opening hours, stage program, St. Nicholas dates) will be published by the organizer in late autumn. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years: market operating on both days with long afternoon openings, catering by local clubs, stage program with choirs and brass bands.
