Historical Medieval Market with Knights' Tournament of the Eisenliga in the Castle Town of the former Counts of Katzenelnbogen
The Counts of Katzenelnbogen were among the most influential noble families in Hesse and the Rhineland during the High and Late Middle Ages. Until the 15th century, their power extended from the Lahn to the Middle Rhine and deep into Hesse. The castle town of Katzenelnbogen still bears their name today – and celebrates it with the Catzenelnbogen Knights' Games.
The centerpiece is the Knights' Tournament of the Eisenliga, one of the most renowned league tournaments on the German medieval scene. Fully armoured riders compete in jousting, melee, and sword fighting, with the herald explaining the rules and stories behind each bout to the audience. The Eisenliga unites some of the best combat schools in Germany; their tournaments are considered both authentic and spectacular.
Around the tournament grounds, the Medieval Market springs up with craft stalls: blacksmiths at the forge, leatherworkers, bow makers, potters, glassblowers, felt workshops. Minstrels with historical instruments roam the alleys, jesters juggle and swallow fire, and medieval taverns serve mead, beer, and hearty food.
For children, there are special activities: archery under instruction, mock sword fights with wooden swords, craft activities, storytellers. Those who come in historical costume immerse themselves even more deeply in the world of the Middle Ages.
