A Saalestad with a Packed Cultural Calendar

Calbe (Saale) is a small town in the Salzlandkreis district, about 30 kilometers south of Magdeburg. Despite, or perhaps because of, its manageable size, the town boasts a remarkably active cultural scene. The non-profit association Calbe macht Kultur has been organizing a cohesive series of events for years, shaping the summer and autumn culturally from May to October.

Unlike a classic festival, Calbe macht Kultur is not a one-off weekend but a common thread throughout the year: individual concerts, readings, cabaret evenings, and a central summer festival combine to form a continuous series. Venues include the Calbe Art and Culture Centre on Feldstraße, the St. Norbert church, as well as various open-air locations in the town park and on the banks of the Saale river.

Program 2026 — Four Highlights

The series kicks off on May 31, 2026, with a Gospel concert in St. Norbert Church – free entry, one of the most beautiful summer traditions in Calbe. On June 20, 2026, the 18th Gottesgnaden Music Festival follows, one of the oldest continuous music festivals in the Salzlandkreis (10 €). In mid-August, the big Summer Festival takes place – the main event of the series, with a stage program and family activities. On October 23, 2026, a concert with comedy by Friedrich & Wiesenhütter concludes the season.

Calbe and the Saaletal Valley

Calbe is located directly on the Saale river, in a quiet stretch between Bernburg and Schönebeck. Visitors attending the summer program can combine their stay with walks along the Saale, a visit to the historic town center, and a tour to nearby Nienburg. In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Calbe is a hidden cultural gem – not a major tourist highlight, but precisely for this reason, it is particularly attractive for authentic cultural experiences.
