Calbe makes Culture

A Saale city with a dense cultural calendar

Calbe (Saale) is a small town in the Salzlandkreis district, approximately 30 kilometers south of Magdeburg. Despite or precisely because of its manageable size, the town boasts a remarkably active cultural scene. The non-profit association Calbe macht Kultur has been organizing a coherent series of events for years, shaping the summer and autumn culturally from May to October.

Unlike a classic festival, Calbe macht Kultur is not a one-off weekend event, but rather a common thread throughout the year: individual concerts, readings, cabaret evenings, and a central summer festival combine to form a continuous series. Venues include the Kunst- und Kulturzentrum Calbe (Art and Culture Centre Calbe) in Feldstraße, the Hospitalkirche (Hospital Church) on the Saale island of Gottesgnaden, the Festwiese (Festival Meadow) in Ritterstraße, as well as various open-air locations within the city area and along the Saale riverbank.

Program 2026 — the Highlights

The series kicked off on May 31, 2026 with a Gospel Concert. On June 20, 2026, the 18th Gottesgnaden Music Festival will follow, organized by Gottesgnaden Musikfestival e.V. in the Hospitalkirche on the Saale island of Gottesgnaden — one of the oldest continuous music festivals in the Salzlandkreis district (starts 4 PM, admission 10 €). On August 21, 2026, the big Summer Festival with Young Province will take place on the Festwiese in Ritterstraße — an open-air concert as the main event of the series (admission 10 €). On October 23, 2026, a Concert with Comedy by Friedrich & Wiesenhütter at the Kunst- und Kulturzentrum will conclude the season (admission 10 €).

Calbe and the Saale Valley

Calbe is located directly on the Saale river, on a quiet stretch between Bernburg and Schönebeck. Visitors to the summer program can combine their stay with walks along the Saale, a visit to the historic city center, and a tour to nearby Nienburg. In the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, Calbe is a hidden cultural gem – not a tourist highlight, but precisely for that reason particularly attractive for authentic cultural visits.
