About Caballo Büschelhof

Caballo — the horse and family festival at Büschelhof Eibenberg in Burkhardtsdorf — is one of the most unusual family festivals in the western Erzgebirge. From May 23rd to 25th, 2026 (Whitsun weekend), the traditional farm will be transformed into a colorful festival backdrop with loving demonstrations by the farm horses, a medieval camp with crafts and combat demonstrations, a market with regional products, and live music. The focus is on horses, tradition, and country life — trust, tranquility, and the special bond between humans and animals are at the center. Free admission, daily start at 11 am.

Festival with Character

The Büschelhof Eibenberg in Burkhardtsdorf, a district in the Erzgebirgskreis, is a traditional farm that combines horse breeding, equestrian sports, and cultural events. Caballo (Spanish for "horse") is the farm's annual Whitsun festival — an event that consciously sets itself apart from the region's major riding tournaments. Instead of sports competitions, the focus is on loving demonstrations with the farm horses: shows on horse-human communication, riding art demonstrations, children's riding, and horse shows that emphasize trust and tranquility.

Medieval Camp and Crafts

A special feature of Caballo is the medieval camp next to the stables. Medieval reenactors set up their tents on the farm, cook over open fires, practice traditional crafts (blacksmithing, bow making, leatherwork, felt art), and perform combat demonstrations with swords, lances, and bows. This combination of horse theme and the Middle Ages is unusual but fitting — horses were the most important means of transport and warfare in the Middle Ages, and the atmosphere of the medieval camps suits the historic farm setting.

Market and Culinary Diversity

The market at Caballo is small but carefully selected. Exhibitors from the region offer leather goods, felt art, riding equipment, medieval clothing, jewelry, honey, and herbs from the Erzgebirge. There are also food stalls — from medieval "Stockbrot" (stick bread) and hearty Erzgebirge farmer's breakfast to bratwurst and ham slices. The atmosphere is familial, the farm is manageable, and the distances are short.

Live Music and Family Program

Folk bands, medieval groups, and smaller song bands perform on the farm stage — no big acts, but atmospheric live music fitting the farm's ambiance. For children, there is a special program with pony rides, a petting zoo, craft activities, and games related to horses. Families are explicitly welcome and are the central target group of the festival.

Burkhardtsdorf and the Erzgebirge

Burkhardtsdorf is located in the western Erzgebirge in the Erzgebirgskreis district of Saxony, about 20 km south of Chemnitz. The Büschelhof is located in the Eibenberg district on Einsiedler Straße. The surrounding area is characterized by forests, meadows, and small Erzgebirge villages. Those arriving for Caballo can easily combine it with a stay in the Erzgebirge — the proximity to Annaberg-Buchholz, Stollberg, Thalheim, and the UNESCO World Heritage Montanregion makes the farm a good starting point for day trips.
