About Bunte Platte

Bunte Platte is the traditional May festival in Neu-Hohenschönhausen, one of Berlin's largest prefabricated housing estates (Plattenbau) in the Lichtenberg district. On May 1st, the Quartierspark am Warnitzer Bogen (corner of Vincent-van-Gogh-Straße, Falkenberger Chaussee) transforms into a neighborhood meeting point with a stage program, information booths, live music, dance groups, and children's activities. Organized by the Lichtenberg District Office in collaboration with Synicial Berlin. Free admission. The festival thematically represents diversity and neighborhood cohesion — a format that highlights the large housing estate as a vibrant, colorful place to live.

Neu-Hohenschönhausen, the „Plattenbau“

Neu-Hohenschönhausen is one of the largest prefabricated housing estates from the former GDR — built in the 1980s, it is now part of the Lichtenberg district in northeastern Berlin. With over 50,000 inhabitants, the neighborhood is a small town in itself, long burdened by the stigma of the „gray Plattenbau“. „Bunte Platte“ — literally translated as „colorful slab“ — is the neighborhood's annual statement against this image: a festival that showcases the diversity, creativity, and vibrancy of the large housing estate.

Quartierspark am Warnitzer Bogen

The venue is the Quartierspark am Warnitzer Bogen — a relatively newly created green space at the corner of Vincent-van-Gogh-Straße / Falkenberger Chaussee. The location is easily accessible by public transport (S-Bahn S8/S41/S42/S85, U-Bahn U5, Tram M5/M13/16/18, several bus lines). On May 1st, a program featuring local bands, dance groups, and children's artists will be performed on a small stage. District Mayor Martin Schaefer typically opens the festival personally.

Information Mile and Children's Program

Around the stage, local social welfare organizations, counseling centers, youth projects, social initiatives, and district projects present themselves with booths. For children, there are play activities, craft sessions, and hands-on stations. Food and drinks are sold via food trucks and stalls. The festival is explicitly family-friendly, runs from 1 PM to 6 PM, and is free to enter — a classic district festival that combines the solidarity tradition of May 1st with modern family formats.
