Traditional town and family festival on the Stadtplatz in the Upper Palatinate Jura
The Bürgerfest Velburg is one of the most important summer town festivals in the Upper Palatinate town of Velburg (Neumarkt district in the Upper Palatinate, Bavaria). The venue is the central Stadtplatz (town square) with a view of the historic Velburg Castle, which towers high above the town and provides the festival with its special backdrop. The town of Velburg is the organizer, supported by all local associations.
The musical focus is the series "Blech am Stadtplatz": Several brass bands from Velburg and neighboring communities will perform alternately on the Stadtplatz stage throughout the festival weekend. The Upper Palatinate brass music tradition holds a significant place here – the Bürgerfest is considered one of the showcases for local music associations.
Parallel to the festival program, the art exhibition "Kunst aus Velburg" opens: Local artists present paintings, sculptures, photography, and crafts in the rooms around the Stadtplatz. The exhibition is an integral part of Velburg's cultural life and is intertwined with the Bürgerfest.
The sporting element is the Burgberglauf: a fun run with the finish line at the Velburg castle ruins, which makes athletic use of the elevation gain of the Velburg Jura. For families, there is face painting, a bouncy castle, a sandpit, and large building blocks. Local associations set up culinary stands with Upper Palatinate specialties, along with coffee and cake from the Women's Association.
Velburg is a small town with around 5,300 inhabitants in the Upper Palatinate Jura, known for its castle, the König-Otto-Tropfsteinhöhle nature reserve, and the hiking area around the Velburg heights. The Bürgerfest has been a fixture in the town's calendar for generations and attracts guests from the neighboring communities of Parsberg, Lupburg, and the entire Schwarze Laber region.
The Bürgerfest Velburg traditionally takes place on the first weekend in August. For 2026, the date is likely Friday to Sunday, July 31 to August 2, 2026. Final confirmation will follow in early summer 2026 from the town of Velburg.
The festival concept has been stable for years: brass music on the Stadtplatz, art exhibition by Velburg artists, Burgberglauf on Sunday, children's program with face painting and play activities, culinary stands from local associations with Upper Palatinate specialties, and coffee and cake from the Women's Association.
