Traditional well festival on the last weekend of June in the Gräfensteiner Land
The Brunnengässelfest is one of those Palatinate village festivals whose name refers to the formerly central element of village life: the well. In the narrow village center of Merzalben, the well was the meeting point, water supply, and social hub for centuries. Out of this tradition, the annual festival developed, celebrating community life around the old "Brunnengässer" (well lanes) and transforming the village into an open-air festival tent on the last weekend of June.
The Kerweplatz in Hammelsbachstraße forms the center of the festival. Here you'll find the stage, beer stands, food stalls, and seating. The program follows a proven structure: Friday evening is dedicated to the musical and cultural opening, often with regional bands or choirs. Saturday and Sunday are entirely dedicated to live music and dancing, complemented by hearty Palatinate specialties such as Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork, potatoes, and spices), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), and Flammkuchen (a thin crust pizza-like dish).
Merzalben is located in the Palatinate Forest Nature Park, directly at the foot of Gräfenstein Castle. This location makes the Brunnengässelfest a popular stopover festival for hikers and cyclists who use the weekend for a tour through the sandstone rocks and mixed forests of the Wasgau region. The close connection between the village festival and the natural environment is one of the strengths of this festival category in the southwest of the Palatinate.
As with all Palatinate village festivals, the Brunnengässelfest is supported by local clubs. FC Gräfenstein Merzalben, the fire department, and other clubs are responsible for setup, dismantling, catering, and program design. The proceeds benefit local club activities – a cycle that has kept the village's cultural infrastructure alive for decades.
The festival is organized by the municipality of Merzalben together with local clubs around FC Gräfenstein. Catering is provided by the clubs, and the proceeds go back into local club activities. Current program details will be published in advance on the club's website and in the pfalz.de event calendar.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring and early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: opening on Friday evening, full operation on Saturday and Sunday.
