Classic Franconian Kirchweih in the Parish Garden
The municipality of Breitengüßbach in the Bamberg district is one of those Upper Franconian communities where the tradition of Kirchweih is particularly vibrant. Five different Kirchweihen are celebrated here throughout the year: Leimershofer Kerwa (May), Hohengüßbach (July), Zückshut (July/August), Unteroberndorf (September), and the central Breitengüßbach Kirchweih in the Parish Garden at the beginning of August. In 2026, this falls on the weekend of August 7th to 10th.
Unlike many Kirchweihen held in festival tents or on sports fields, the Breitengüßbach Kirchweih is traditionally celebrated in the parish garden – one of the most beautiful settings a Kirwa (colloquial term for Kirchweih) can have: old trees, the church tower in the background, a cozy atmosphere. The parish of Breitengüßbach organizes the festival, and the catering is usually handled by the local Catholic clubs.
The Kirchweihbier, Franconian specialties (sausages, Schäuferla, carp, or Bamberger Rauchbier), and amusement rides are, of course, part of it. However, the tradition of Kirchweih dances and the conviviality of the village community are what primarily shape its character. Anyone who wants to experience a typical Kirwa in Franconia will find it here.
Breitengüßbach is located in the Bamberg district directly on the Main River, about ten kilometers north of the World Heritage city of Bamberg. The municipality, with its approximately 4,000 inhabitants, has a classic Upper Franconian character with a traditional club life and a close connection to the parish. Visitors to the Kirwa can easily combine it with a day trip to Bamberg – with the famous smoked beers from the Schlenkerla brewery.
The Breitengüßbach Kirchweih 2026 spans four days, from Friday, August 7th, to Monday, August 10th. The venue is the parish garden of the Breitengüßbach parish – a traditional site that lends the festival a particularly authentic character.
The festival program follows the classic Franconian Kirwa structure: Festival opening on Friday, Grand Festival Evening on Saturday, Festival Service and Sunday Morning Pint on Sunday, Family Day and Wind-down on Monday. Catering is provided by the local Catholic clubs with Franconian specialties and regional beers.
