Second largest Volksfest (traditional fair) in the region on the Schützenplatz – rides, food, and family entertainment in October
The Braunschweiger Herbstmesse is one of the most important Volksfeste in Southeast Lower Saxony. It follows the Braunschweiger Frühjahrsmesse (spring fair) held in spring and, as the second largest Volksfest in the region, is a firm fixture in the calendar of events for the 'Löwenstadt' (Lion City). The venue is the traditional Schützenplatz on Hamburger Straße – one of the largest inner-city fairgrounds in Lower Saxony.
The sprawling grounds feature the typical large rides of a modern Volksfest: Ferris wheel, roller coaster, free-fall tower, wave swinger, Break Dance, and high-tech carousels. Alongside these are classics like bumper cars, chain carousel, haunted house, and pirate ship rides. There is a large children's area with carousels, bouncy castles, and miniature railways specifically for younger children.
Numerous food stalls serve classics like bratwurst, French fries, mushrooms, quark balls (Schmalzkuchen), candied almonds, crêpes, Lángos, and of course, gingerbread hearts. Game stalls, shooting galleries, and lottery vendors complete the offering.
As with many Volksfeste, there are traditionally special offer days with reduced prices for families or seniors, as well as fireworks on the opening and closing weekends. Exact dates are announced in advance by the city and the showmen's association.
The 2026 edition is planned for ten days from Friday, October 2nd, to Sunday, October 11th, 2026. This means the opening weekend falls on the extended weekend around German Unity Day.
As in previous years, numerous showmen families from all over Northern Germany are expected with their rides, food stalls, and game booths. The organizer will announce specific special offer days (family days with price reductions, fireworks, etc.) in good time.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Schützenplatz Braunschweig, Hamburger Straße 53, 38114 Braunschweig.
Take tram line to the "Schützenplatz" stop directly in front of the entrance. Reachable in a few minutes from the main train station. Limited parking available at the Schützenplatz and in the surrounding area – public transport is strongly recommended.
Free admission to the grounds. Payment for rides and food is made directly at the stalls.
Weekdays usually from noon until 11 PM, on weekends until midnight. Exact times and special offer days will be communicated by the organizer in good time.
