Four-day street festival in Marl-Brassert with flea market, funfair, and stage program around Ascension Day
The Brasserter Straßenfest is one of the most important district events in Marl. For four days around Ascension Day, Brassertstraße in the district of the same name transforms into a festival mile with a flea market, funfair, and stage program. Free admission, funfair attractions and street food payable individually.
Thursday, May 14th, 2026, is Ascension Day – traditionally Father's Day in North Rhine-Westphalia. Thus, the festival kicks off on one of the most popular excursion days of the year. Groups of men with handcarts typically head into the districts, and the Brasserter Straßenfest benefits from this movement – Brassertstraße fills up on Thursday morning.
The opening hours in 2026 run daily from 11 AM to 6 PM – a classic daytime schedule that suits families and day-trippers. This avoids the typical late-night funfair atmosphere and clearly positions itself as a family event:
A plus point of the Brasserter Straßenfest is the flea market, which runs daily. Unlike city festivals with a one-off Sunday flea market, there are four days here for browsing: antiques, children's toys, furniture, books, records, dishes, and small items. Those looking for a bargain will find it here.
A funfair area complements the market: carousels for children, simple rides for families, snack and sweet stalls. Small but compact – not a large-scale funfair, but an extension of the city festival.
On the festival stage, you'll find local bands, dance groups, children's shows, and occasionally live streams for major events. The stage program runs throughout all four days, offering different acts each day.
The highlight of the four days is the Sunday shopping on May 17th from 1 PM to 6 PM. Shops along Brassertstraße and in the surrounding area open their doors – an important sales day for local retailers.
Marl is located in the northern Ruhr area, between Recklinghausen and Münsterland. Brassert is one of the central districts, formerly a mining area with company housing. Those who want to experience the traditional Ruhr area will find atmosphere and authenticity here – far from the tourist highlights of the Ruhr area, but with genuine community and district life.
