Boppard Carnival Weekend with Glass and Spirits Ban — Grand Carnival Parade Sunday
Boppard has a vibrant carnival tradition, which, while not as famous as the major Rhineland strongholds of Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Mainz, is deeply rooted regionally. Several Boppard carnival clubs — historic societies with their own formal gatherings, costumes, dance groups, and float-building teams — shape the 'fifth season' events, which are traditionally less boisterous in the Middle Rhine Valley, but more family-oriented and community-driven.
The actual highlight is the evening parade on Carnival Sunday (February 15, 2026, starting at 6:11 PM), which is registered as a separate event. The general decree described here forms the official framework for the entire carnival weekend. It comes into effect on Carnival Saturday, February 14, and Carnival Sunday, February 15, 2026, and prohibits the carrying and consumption of glass and ceramic containers as well as spirits in the defined city centre area between 10 AM and midnight.
Such general decrees are standard in carnival towns and serve to ensure the safety of visitors — broken glass in a dense crowd poses a significant risk of injury, and high-proof alcohol can fuel conflicts. Instead, consumption in plastic or cardboard containers is permitted; beer and wine remain allowed.
In terms of content, the Boppard Carnival weekend consists of the Saturday events with neighbourhood parades (Veedelszüge) from individual districts, children's formal gatherings (Kindersitzungen), and pub carnival, as well as the grand evening parade on Sunday, which winds through the city centre and is accompanied by festival tents and open-air stages. Carnival Monday and Tuesday are quieter in Boppard than the main weekend.
The 2026 carnival weekend will be organised as usual by the Boppard carnival clubs. The town administration provides the legal framework with the general decree and offers logistical support through road closures and security personnel.
The exact programme of the individual Boppard carnival clubs will be published in January 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: neighbourhood parades on Saturday, main parade on Sunday evening (6:11 PM), accompanied by festival tents and stages.
Bring plastic and cardboard containers, no glass bottles. Very dense crowd during the evening parade — watch your valuables. Families with small children should attend the daytime neighbourhood parades.
